Is it safe around water?

For incidental contact, yes — Seiko's 5 bar rating covers rain and washing your hands. It does not cover swimming, showering or putting the watch under on purpose, and the rating describes pressure rather than a depth you can go to. The leather strap is the more fragile part in any case: wetting it repeatedly will stiffen and mark it. Dry it if it gets wet, and keep the watch out of hot water and steam, which are harder on case seals than pressure is.

When should I avoid changing the date?

Between 9:00 pm and 1:00 am. Seiko's instructions for the 4R35 are specific about this window — the date mechanism is engaged through those hours, and forcing it can damage it or leave the date failing to turn over the next night. Wind the hands outside that window first, then set the date, then set the time. You will also need to correct the date by hand after any 30-day month and after February.

Will it stop if I don't wear it?

Yes, after about 41 hours. That is the limit of what the mainspring holds, so an overnight break is fine but a few days in a drawer will run it down. Winding the crown or putting it back on your wrist rebuilds the reserve, and it needs to be reasonably full before the watch will hold time properly. Being mechanical, it also needs servicing from time to time to stay accurate and water resistant — City Chain can take care of that.

Can the strap be fitted to my wrist?

City Chain can adjust the strap for you in store — bring your warranty book along for the service. The fastening is a three-fold clasp with a push button release rather than a pin buckle, so it closes on itself and there is no strap hole to stretch over time. If your wrist falls between sizes, have it set in store rather than forcing the fit.

Is the movement visible?

Yes. The case back is see-through and screwed in at the same time, so you can turn the watch over and watch the 4R35 at work — the rotor sweeping round as your wrist moves, the balance wheel beating steadily beneath it. It is also a good reminder of why the case needs the depth it has.

How does 38.5mm sit on the wrist?

It is a traditional dress watch diameter, neither small nor large by current standards. The number that really governs fit is the 45.4mm lug-to-lug span, since that is the dimension reaching across your wrist. The case is 11.8mm deep — the room an automatic movement and a raised crystal need between them — and the leather strap keeps the complete weight to 63g. What does the warranty cover?

The SRPE43J1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer.
