The Seiko Presage SRPE41J1 puts a red Cocktail Time dial — vibrant and glossy, in Seiko's description of the series — into a 38.5mm steel case measuring 45.4mm from lug to lug, on a brown calfskin strap. The box-shaped Hardlex crystal accounts for much of the 11.8mm depth: it rises clear of the bezel in a short wall, framing the dial rather than covering it flat.
Calibre 4R35 is an automatic with manual winding, holding approximately 41 hours and visible through the see-through case back. There is a date, and the seconds can be stopped so the time can be set against a signal. The calfskin leather strap brings the watch to 63g. Water resistance is 5 bar — rain and handwashing rather than swimming, and the leather is the part that minds water most.

Why You'll Love It
- 41 hours covers a night off the wrist but not a weekend, so this is a watch that rewards being worn daily rather than kept in rotation.
- Light entering through the vertical wall of the crystal behaves differently from light through a flat pane, which is why the dial seems to shift as you tilt your wrist.
- The seconds hand can be halted and released against a time signal — the difference between setting a mechanical watch to the second and to the nearest minute.
- No battery to replace and nothing to charge; the movement runs on a spring your own wrist winds.
- 63g complete. In Singapore heat that is the difference between a watch you keep on and one you take off at lunchtime.
Key Features
- Calibre 4R35 automatic with manual winding — 23 jewels, approximately 41 hours of power reserve, with a date display and a stop second hand function.
- Box-shaped Hardlex crystal — Hardlex is Seiko's own crystal material, made in-house and fitted across much of its range. Here it is shaped as a raised box rather than a flat pane.
- 50-metre water resistance and a see-through and screw case back — rain and handwashing rather than swimming, and the leather minds water most.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear it in water?
Only incidentally. Seiko's 5 bar rating is there for the water you meet by accident — rain, a splash at the sink — and not for swimming, showering or putting the watch under deliberately; the figure describes pressure, not a depth you can reach. The leather strap is the first thing to suffer anyway: wet it repeatedly and it stiffens and discolours. Dry it if it does get wet, and keep the watch away from hot water and steam, which do more damage to case seals than pressure does.
Is there a wrong time to set the date?
Yes — and it is particular to the 4R35 rather than a rule that applies to every automatic. Seiko's instructions say not to set the date between 9:00 pm and 1:00 am: the date mechanism is already engaged through those hours, and forcing it can damage it or leave the date stuck the following night. Wind the hands away from that window first, set the date, then set the time. The date also needs a manual nudge after every 30-day month and after February.
What happens if I leave it in a drawer?
It runs down and stops. The spring stores about 41 hours, which comfortably covers a night but not a weekend away. To restart it, wind the crown or wear it for a while — the reserve needs to be reasonably full before the watch will hold time properly. And because it is mechanical, it needs periodic servicing to stay accurate and water resistant; City Chain can arrange that for you.
Can the strap be fitted to my wrist?
City Chain can adjust the strap for you in store — bring your warranty book along for the service. The fastening is a three-fold clasp with a push button release rather than a pin buckle, so it closes on itself and there is no strap hole to stretch over time. If your wrist falls between sizes, have it set in store rather than forcing the fit.
Can I see the movement through the back?
Yes. Seiko has fitted a case back that is see-through and screwed in at once, so the 4R35 stays visible behind a sealed back. Turn the watch over and you can follow the rotor swinging with your wrist and the balance wheel beating — the whole reason the case is as deep as it is.
How does 38.5mm wear?
It is the classic middle ground — not a small watch, not a large one. The figure that settles the fit is the 45.4mm lug-to-lug span, since that is what reaches across the wrist, and it is modest enough to suit narrower wrists. The 11.8mm depth is what the automatic movement and the raised crystal need between them, and at 63g on leather the watch sits lightly. Any City Chain outlet can put it on your wrist before you decide.
What warranty does this watch come with?
The SRPE41J1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. The warranty covers manufacturing defects rather than accidental damage, wear or routine servicing, and the strap is treated as a wearing part rather than a covered component. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.
