The Seiko Presage SRPB43J1 comes from Cocktail Time, the Presage series built around its dials — Seiko describes them as vibrant and glossy, reminiscent of colourful cocktails. Here that dial is light blue, on a blue calfskin strap, and it sits beneath a box-shaped Hardlex crystal that rises clear of the bezel instead of lying flat across it, and the raised profile is what you notice first: depth from the side, and the way the surface catches the light as your wrist turns. The case is 40.5mm of stainless steel, 11.8mm deep, on a calfskin leather strap.

It is a mechanical watch. Calibre 4R35 winds itself as you wear it, holds around 41 hours when fully wound and can also be wound by hand, so there is nothing to charge and no battery to replace — and the see-through case back lets you watch it running. A date sits on the dial, and the seconds hand can be stopped to set the time precisely. At 70g the watch wears lightly for its size, and the 5 bar rating covers everyday wear rather than swimming.

Why You'll Love It

  • 40.5mm is the size most men's watches have settled at, so it sits on the wrist as expected rather than drawing attention to its own proportions.
  • Nothing to charge and no battery to replace — the movement runs on a spring you wind, or that your own movement winds for you.
  • The raised crystal is part of the case architecture rather than a cover over it, and it is the first thing most people notice.
  • You can watch it work: the case back is see-through and screwed in, so the rotor and balance are on view behind a sealed back.
  • 70g complete, on leather. A full 40.5mm case that still sits lightly from morning to evening.

Key Features

  • Calibre 4R35 automatic with manual winding — 23 jewels, approximately 41 hours of power reserve, with a date display and a stop second hand function.
  • Box-shaped Hardlex crystal — Hardlex is Seiko's own crystal material, made in-house and fitted across much of its range. Here it is shaped as a raised box rather than a flat pane.
  • 50-metre water resistance and a see-through and screw case back — everyday wear rather than swimming, and the leather objects before the case does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the date need adjusting?

Yes, after any month shorter than 31 days — so at the start of each 31st-less month and after February, the date will read one or more days ahead and needs correcting by hand. When you do it, mind the timing: Seiko's instructions for the 4R35 say not to change the date between 9:00 pm and 1:00 am, because the mechanism is engaged with the nightly changeover through those hours and forcing it can damage it. Wind the hands clear of that window, set the date, then set the time.

Can I wear it in the rain or the shower?

Rain is fine; the shower is not. Seiko's 5 bar rating covers the water you meet incidentally, not swimming, showering or deliberate immersion, and the figure describes pressure rather than a depth. The leather strap is the part that suffers first — soak it and it stiffens and marks — so dry it if it gets wet, and keep the watch out of hot water and steam, which age case seals faster than pressure does.

Does it need winding?

Not usually, if you wear it. The 4R35 winds itself from the motion of your wrist and stores about 41 hours, so daily wear keeps it going indefinitely. Leave it off for longer than that and it will stop, at which point you can wind it at the crown by hand or simply wear it until the reserve builds back up. Mechanical movements also need periodic servicing to stay accurate and water resistant, which City Chain can arrange.

Can the strap be fitted to my wrist?

City Chain can adjust the strap for you in store — bring your warranty book along for the service. The fastening is a three-fold clasp with a push button release rather than a pin buckle, so it closes on itself and there is no strap hole to stretch over time. If your wrist falls between sizes, have it set in store rather than forcing the fit.

What is behind the case back?

Calibre 4R35, and you can see it. The back is see-through and screwed in at once, so the movement stays on display behind a properly closed case. The large part sweeping round is the rotor, which winds the mainspring as your wrist moves; the small oscillating wheel beside it is the balance, which regulates the rate.

How big does 40.5mm feel?

It is a standard contemporary size for a men's watch — neither compact nor oversized — and the case is 11.8mm deep, which is what an automatic movement and a raised crystal need between them. Seiko does not publish a lug-to-lug measurement for this reference, and that is the dimension that really governs how a case spans the wrist, so rather than estimate it we would suggest trying the watch on. At 70g on leather it is not heavy. Any City Chain outlet can put it on your wrist before you decide.

What is covered by the warranty?

Buying the SRPB43J1 from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer, includes a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. It does not cover accidental damage, ordinary wear or routine servicing, and the strap is treated as a wearing part rather than a covered component. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase, as the watch cannot be submitted for warranty service without them.
