At 29.8mm across and 8.5mm deep, the Seiko SUR349P1 is a small watch that has been given a surprising amount to do. The silver dial carries baton markers, three hands and both the day and the date — a full calendar on a dial most watches this size leave bare. Case and bracelet are stainless steel, and the whole thing comes to 67g.
The specification underneath is sturdier than the proportions suggest. Sapphire covers the dial, the case back screws down, and the watch is rated to 10 bar — enough for a shower, a swim, or a bath, though not for scuba diving. Calibre 6N33 is quartz, holding ±15 seconds a month across roughly three years of battery life. The one thing it does not offer is night-time legibility: there is no luminous material on the dial, so in an unlit room it shows nothing at all.

Why You'll Love It
- Ten bar is a serious rating to find under a dress watch of these proportions. It means the watch does not have to come off for the shower, the pool or the washing-up.
- Getting a weekday as well as a date onto a 29.8mm dial takes real restraint in the layout, and it is the sort of thing you stop noticing precisely because it works.
- Sapphire takes the everyday scuffing that gradually clouds a watch face, which matters more on a small dial where any mark sits right in your eyeline.
- Quartz keeps its own time and asks for nothing. Wear it daily or leave it a month, and it is still accurate when you look down.
- Nothing on this dial is luminous, so it will not tell you the time in the dark — the one thing worth weighing before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are the day and the date adjusted?
Through the two crown positions. At the first click, turning the crown moves the date, and turning it the opposite way moves the weekday; the usual method is to set each one step behind where you want it. Then pull out to the second click and wind the hands forward until the right date and weekday appear together, which also confirms the watch is reading morning rather than evening. Set the time and push the crown home. Seiko's general instructions for analogue watches advise against changing the calendar between 9:00 pm and 4:00 am, for the reason Seiko states and no other: the calendar may not change properly. Seiko publishes no separate manual for calibre 6N33, so treat that as the general guidance it is — and if you need to set the calendar during those hours, simply move the hands outside the window first.
Can it go in the water?
Comfortably. Seiko's general guidance puts a watch rated this way on a par with bathing or shallow diving, so showering, swimming and being caught out in the rain are all well within it, and the steel bracelet means nothing needs drying off afterwards. Scuba diving is where the line falls — Seiko rules it out and points to its Diver's watches instead — and the 100-metre figure describes a tested pressure rather than a depth you can swim to. Make sure the crown is pushed fully in before the watch gets wet, leave the crown alone while it is wet or soapy, and rinse the case in fresh water after the sea or a pool.
Does anything on the dial light up?
No. Seiko lists no luminous material for this reference, so neither the hands nor the baton markers hold any glow and the dial disappears in a dark room. It is worth deciding now whether that matters to you, since it is not something that can be added later. A reference specified with LumiBrite is the alternative if you want the time readable at night.
What glass is fitted?
Sapphire. It is grown synthetically for use over watch dials and ranks among the hardest materials put to the job, which is why it resists the small abrasions that gradually haze a watch face. Hardness is not invulnerability, though: a sharp impact against something like tile or stone can still chip it. On a dial this size the point is a practical one, since every mark lands in the middle of what you are trying to read.
When does the battery need attention?
Seiko quotes roughly three years. Many Seiko quartz watches warn you first: the seconds hand begins advancing in two-second jumps rather than ticking once a second, while still keeping correct time. Seiko is clear that not every calibre includes that indicator, so treat it as a helpful sign rather than something to rely on. Bring the watch to any City Chain store for servicing — this case back screws in and has to be resealed correctly, or the water resistance the watch was sold with is lost.
How does 29.8mm actually wear, and is the bracelet adjustable?
The figure that governs it is the 37.5mm lug-to-lug span, since that is the length crossing the wrist rather than the width of the dial. With 8.5mm of case depth and 67g all in, this sits at the compact end of the range, and the bracelet runs on 14mm lugs. Adjustment is done by removing links. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet, with your warranty book to hand.
Is the watch covered by a warranty?
Yes — a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects, when the SUR349P1 is bought from City Chain Singapore as an authorised Seiko retailer. It covers faults in how the watch was built, not knocks, everyday wear or a battery that has simply run down. Both the warranty card and your receipt are needed when a watch goes in for warranty work, so keep the two together.
