Seiko Astron SSH183J1 — GPS Solar Chronograph 2025 Limited Edition

The Seiko Astron SSH183J1 is one of only 1,200 pieces produced worldwide — a 2025 limited edition GPS solar chronograph created under the "Solidity" design theme that symbolises Seiko's innovative spirit since 1881. Sharing the same ceramic and titanium bracelet construction, aluminium and ceramic bezel, and 5X83 GPS solar chronograph calibre as its sibling the SSH185J1, the SSH183J1 is distinguished by its silvery grey dial with orange-accented subdials — a warmer, more dynamic colour combination that gives this edition a character entirely its own.

The silvery grey dial features a horizontal line-patterned solar cell and a vertical subdial layout — the subdial at 12 o'clock for the chronograph function, at 9 o'clock for setting modes, and at 6 o'clock for dual time — each accented in orange for a bold, energetic aesthetic that references the visual language of high-performance sports timing instruments. The super-hard coated titanium case with aluminium and ceramic bezel sits at 43.4mm with an almost seamless flow from case through lugs to the silver and black ceramic and titanium bracelet — designed with a low centre of gravity for all-day comfort and micro-adjustable for a personalised fit. Dual-curved sapphire crystal with super clear coating completes a specification as ambitious as the design.

Why You'll Love It

The SSH183J1 is the more energetic and dynamic of the two 2025 Astron GPS solar chronograph limited editions — where the SSH185J1's green accents on black create a precise, technical character, the SSH183J1's orange accents on silvery grey create a warmer, more overtly sporting energy that references the colour language of motorsport timing at its most expressive. Orange on grey is one of the most striking colour combinations in high-performance design — instantly recognisable, immediately purposeful, and deeply connected to the heritage of professional sports instruments. The silvery grey dial with its horizontal line patterning changes character in different light, the ceramic and titanium bracelet keeps it featherlight despite the 43.4mm presence, and the 5X83 calibre's GPS accuracy, 1/20th second chronograph, and dual time mean the technology is as capable as the design is compelling. With only 1,200 pieces worldwide and the "Solidity" theme connecting it to Seiko's 144-year heritage of innovation, the SSH183J1 is a watch that occupies its own space in the 2025 Astron collection.

SSH183J1 vs SSH185J1 — Which Should You Choose?

Both models share identical specifications — the same 5X83 GPS solar chronograph calibre, 43.4mm titanium case, ceramic and titanium bracelet, aluminium and ceramic bezel, dual-curved sapphire crystal, and 1,200-piece worldwide limitation. The difference is entirely in the dial colour and accent. The SSH185J1 has a black textured dial with green-accented subdials and a black and white bracelet — precise, technical, and suited to those who want a dark, instrument-style aesthetic. The SSH183J1 has a silvery grey dial with orange-accented subdials and a silver and black bracelet — warmer, more dynamic, and suited to those who want a sporting, energetic character. Same movement, same rarity, two completely different personalities. The choice comes down to green or orange — dark precision or bright energy.

The Seiko Astron Story

Seiko Astron is the world's first GPS solar watch — powered by light and automatically adjusted to your exact time zone through satellite technology. The story begins in 1881, when Kintaro Hattori founded a clock and watch shop in Ginza, Tokyo — the business that would become the Seiko of today. Since the first Astron was introduced in 1969 as the world's first quartz watch, Seiko has continuously pushed the boundaries of what a wristwatch can do. The GPS Solar Astron, launched in 2012, represented a new frontier — a watch that never needs setting, never runs out of power in normal use, and is accurate to a standard no mechanical or conventional quartz watch can match. The SSH183J1 carries that spirit of innovation forward in 2025 with the most dynamic colour expression in the current Astron limited edition lineup.
