Speedtimer is the name Seiko gives its chronographs, and it goes back a long way. Seiko moved onto the international sports timing stage in the 1960s with a new generation of high-precision equipment, and in 1969 put the name on a wristwatch: the Seiko Speedtimer, driven by Calibre 6139 — the world's first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. The Seiko Prospex HBJ005P1 carries that line into Seiko's 145th anniversary.
This reference is a solar chronograph. Calibre V192 runs on light alone — no battery to replace — and holds roughly six months of charge once full. The anniversary colour is Edo purple, set against black sub-dials and a black-and-purple aluminium bezel carrying a tachymetre scale. The chronograph times to 1/5th of a second over 60 minutes, there is a power reserve indicator and a date, and the case back is engraved LIMITED EDITION on a run of 8,000 pieces.

Why You'll Love It
- It runs on light. Calibre V192 charges from any light source, indoors or out, so there is no battery to change and no winding to remember.
- Six months of running time from a full charge, with overcharge prevention built in so the cell is not damaged by being left in bright light.
- A power reserve indicator on the dial, so you can see how much charge is left rather than finding out when it stops.
- The bezel is the clearest piece of Speedtimer design here — black and purple aluminium, the bi-colour treatment drawn from Seiko's vintage chronographs, with a tachymetre scale running round it.
- Edo purple against black sub-dials. The contrast is what makes the layout readable rather than decorative, and it is the anniversary colour used across Series 3.
- LumiBrite on all twelve hour markers as well as the hands, so the dial stays readable in the dark across the full circle.
- Curved sapphire with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface — glare control without a coating exposed to scratching on the outside.
- Chronograph timing to 1/5th of a second over 60 minutes, plus a date and a 24-hour hand.
- A limited run of 8,000 pieces, with LIMITED EDITION engraved on the case back.
- ±15 seconds a month. Solar quartz accuracy, held over the life of the charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Speedtimer?
It is the name Seiko gives its chronographs, and it dates to the company's entry into international sports timing in the 1960s. In 1969 Seiko applied it to a wristwatch with Calibre 6139, which Seiko describes as the world's first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. The modern Prospex Speedtimer line is built on that timing heritage; this particular reference is a solar chronograph rather than a mechanical one.
What is the Seiko 145th anniversary, and why purple?
Seiko was founded in 1881, which makes 2026 its 145th year. The anniversary collection is split into three series, each with its own theme — gold accents, Seiko Blue, and Edo purple. This watch belongs to the third, and Seiko describes Edo-murasaki as reflecting the traditions passed on from ancient Edo to modern-day Tokyo and the spirit of creativity.
Do I ever need to change the battery?
No. Calibre V192 is solar — it converts light into power and stores it, so ordinary daylight and indoor lighting keep it charged. There is no battery replacement in normal use, and an overcharge prevention function stops the cell being damaged by long spells in bright light.
What happens if I leave it in a drawer?
It will keep running for approximately six months from a full charge. Beyond that it stops, and putting it back in light will start it again — you then reset the time and date. The power reserve indicator on the dial tells you where you stand before it gets that far.
What does the tachymetre do?
It converts elapsed time into speed. Start the chronograph as you pass a marker, stop it one kilometre or one mile later, and the figure the chronograph seconds hand points to on the bezel is your average speed over that distance in kilometres or miles per hour. It works for anything measured over a fixed distance, not only driving.
How does the chronograph work?
It times up to 60 minutes and resolves to 1/5th of a second. The pushers start, stop and reset it, and the reading is taken from the chronograph hand and its sub-dial counter. The small seconds hand runs continuously alongside, so you can see at a glance that the watch itself is still going.
What is the power reserve indicator for?
It shows how much stored charge is left, so a solar watch gives warning rather than simply stopping. If it reads low, a few hours near a window or under a bright lamp will bring it back up.
How accurate is it?
Seiko states ±15 seconds per month for Calibre V192. That works out to a few seconds a week at most, so checking it two or three times a year is enough.
Can I swim and shower with it?
Yes. At 100 metres this handles swimming, snorkelling and showering without concern, though Seiko gives it no diver's designation, so it should not be used for scuba diving. Avoid operating the chronograph pushers while it is submerged, rinse it in fresh water after the sea or a pool, and have the case seals checked at service intervals.
How does 41.4mm wear?
Moderately, for a chronograph. At 13.0mm thick and 168 grams it has weight to it, but the 45.9mm lug-to-lug is compact and keeps it within the width of most wrists — shorter than the diameter would suggest. Note the 21mm lug width, which is slightly unusual. Any City Chain outlet can put it on your wrist.
Can the bracelet be adjusted?
Yes. Links can be added or removed to size it, and the three-fold clasp opens on a push button release rather than a pin buckle, which is more secure and easier to fasten one-handed. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet; bring your warranty book along for the service.
Does a solar watch need servicing?
Less often than a mechanical watch, but it is not maintenance-free. The rechargeable cell has a working life measured in years rather than months, and the case gaskets that hold the water resistance need replacing periodically. City Chain can arrange servicing through Seiko's authorised service network — bring your warranty book.
What warranty does this watch come with?
The HBJ005P1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.
