Limited Edition — 7,000 Pieces

Seiko's first sports watch was a mountaineering watch. The Laurel Alpinist was born in 1959, built to withstand the demands of climbing and the outdoors, and made for mountain climbers and field sports enthusiasts at a time when Japanese watchmaking had not yet turned to sport. The Seiko Prospex HBC006J1 carries that line into the company's 145th anniversary.

The anniversary colour is Edo purple, marking the traditions carried from ancient Edo through to modern-day Tokyo. Around the dial runs the Alpinist's rotating compass inner ring, and the case — 39.5mm of stainless steel with a super hard coating — has a screw-down crown and is rated to 200 metres. Inside, Calibre 6R55 holds 72 hours of running time, three full days. The case back is see-through and engraved LIMITED EDITION on a run of 7,000 pieces.

Why You'll Love It

  • The Alpinist is where Seiko's sports watches begin. The 1959 Laurel Alpinist was the company's first, and this reference marks 145 years by returning to it.
  • Three days of running time. The 72-hour power reserve means a watch taken off on Friday evening is still running on Monday morning — no resetting after a weekend off the wrist.
  • The rotating compass inner ring is the Alpinist's signature, and it is a working instrument rather than decoration.
  • A super hard coating on the case, which is Seiko's surface treatment for watches expected to be worn outdoors rather than kept for occasions.
  • 200 metres of water resistance behind a screw-down crown. That is a serious rating for a watch that looks this restrained.
  • 39.5mm across and 12.7mm thick. Compact by modern sports-watch standards, and closer to the proportions the Alpinist has always worn.
  • Edo purple on a field watch. It is an unexpected colour on this design, and the reason this is a 7,000-piece edition rather than a catalogue model.
  • LumiBrite on the hands and indexes, charged by light and readable in the dark without a battery drain.
  • Sapphire with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface — glare control without a coating exposed to scratching on the outside.
  • A see-through case back engraved LIMITED EDITION, leaving the movement visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Alpinist?

Seiko's original outdoor watch, and its first sports watch of any kind. The Laurel Alpinist was born in 1959, built to withstand the demands of mountaineering, and introduced to meet the needs of mountain climbers and recreational field sports enthusiasts. Seiko describes the modern line as combining toughness and practicality with a design at home both in nature and the city.

What is the compass inner ring for?

Orienting yourself outdoors. The ring rotates inside the crystal and is used together with the sun and the hour hand to work out roughly which way you are facing — the reason a mountaineering watch carries one. It is a field tool rather than a substitute for a proper compass. The instruction manual supplied with the watch sets out how to use it.

What is the Seiko 145th anniversary, and why purple?

Seiko was founded in 1881, which makes 2026 its 145th year. The anniversary collection is split into three series, each with its own theme — gold accents, Seiko Blue, and Edo purple. This watch belongs to the third, and Seiko describes Edo-murasaki as reflecting the traditions passed on from ancient Edo to modern-day Tokyo and the spirit of creativity.

What does a 72-hour power reserve mean in practice?

Three full days of running from a full wind. Take the watch off on Friday evening and it will still be running on Monday morning, which is the practical difference between this and a movement with a 41-hour reserve. It also means a watch in rotation with others stays useful for longer between wears.

How does the automatic movement work?

A weighted rotor inside Calibre 6R55 turns as your wrist moves, winding the mainspring. Wearing it through a normal day keeps it running. You can also wind it by hand using the crown, which is the quickest way to start it from cold.

How accurate is it?

Seiko states +25 to -15 seconds per day for Calibre 6R55. The stop second hand function halts the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out, so the watch can be set precisely against a time reference rather than approximately.

Can I swim with it?

The case is rated to 200 metres, which is well beyond what swimming asks of it, and the crown screws down. The practical limit here is the leather strap rather than the watch — leather does not tolerate repeated soaking, so this is not the watch to swim in regularly while it is on its original strap. Seiko gives no diver's designation, so it should not be used for scuba diving either.

What does the screw-down crown do?

It threads into the case rather than simply pushing in, which seals the opening the crown passes through. Make sure it is screwed fully home before the watch goes near water — an unscrewed crown is the most common reason a water-resistant watch lets water in.

How does 39.5mm wear?

Compactly. At 39.5mm across and 12.7mm thick this sits at the smaller end of the current sports watch range, and the 46.4mm lug-to-lug keeps it within the width of most wrists. It suits smaller wrists well and reads as a field watch rather than a large sports model. Any City Chain outlet can put it on your wrist.

How do I look after the leather strap?

Keep it dry. Moisture is what shortens a leather strap's life — sweat, rain and humidity all break the fibres down over time. Wipe it after a humid day, let it dry away from direct heat, and avoid fastening it so tightly that it creases in the same place every day.

What can I see through the case back?

The movement itself — the balance wheel oscillating, the rotor turning as you move, the gear train running. On this reference the case back also carries the LIMITED EDITION engraving that marks it as part of the anniversary run.

Does a mechanical watch need servicing?

Yes, eventually. A mechanical movement runs on lubricated moving parts that wear over years of use, so a service every few years keeps it running to specification, and is also when the case gaskets that hold the water resistance are replaced. City Chain can arrange servicing through Seiko's authorised service network — bring your warranty book.

What warranty does this watch come with?

The HBC006J1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.
