The Seiko SUR341P1 is a blue dial with baton markers and a day and date display, in a 40.2mm stainless steel case on a matching steel bracelet. The glass is sapphire, which is not a given at this size and price, and the case back screws in rather than pressing on. At 8.4mm the case is slim for a watch carrying a calendar.

Calibre 6N53 is quartz, so the watch keeps time to ±15 seconds a month and runs roughly three years on a battery with nothing asked of you in between. It weighs 114g and spans 47mm from lug to lug, which is the figure to measure against rather than the diameter. Two things worth knowing before you buy: there is no luminous material on the dial, so it cannot be read in the dark; and the 10 bar rating is generous enough for a bath or a swim but stops well short of scuba diving.

Why You'll Love It

  • The day sits on the dial next to the date, so a glance answers both questions a working week asks — which day it is as well as which number.
  • Quartz asks nothing of you. Leave the watch in a drawer for a month and it is still running and still right when you pick it up.
  • 8.4mm is slim for a 40mm watch with a calendar behind the dial, which is the part of the specification you feel rather than read.
  • The case back screws in rather than pressing on, and at 10 bar Seiko's instructions put a bath and a swim inside what the watch is built for.
  • There is no luminous material anywhere on this dial, so it will not be readable in the dark — better known now than discovered later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set the day and the date?

Seiko's procedure uses both crown positions. Pull the crown to the first click and turn it until the previous day's date shows in the window, then turn the crown the other way until the day name just before the one you want appears. Now pull the crown out to the second click and wind the hands forward until the date and the day you actually want roll over together — that also tells you the watch is in the right half of the day. Set the time and push the crown home. One rule matters above the rest: do not change the calendar between 9:00 pm and 4:00 am. The reason Seiko gives is simply that the calendar may not change properly if altered then. If you find yourself inside that window, move the hands outside it first, set the calendar, then put the time back.

Is it safe in the bath or the pool?

Both are fine. Seiko's instructions describe a 10 bar watch as suitable for wearing in a bath or while shallow diving, which comfortably covers swimming, showering and getting caught in the rain. What it is not built for is scuba diving — Seiko says so directly and points to its Diver's watches for that. The 100-metre figure is a test pressure, not a depth the watch may be taken to. Two habits are worth keeping: make sure the crown is pushed fully home before the watch goes near water, and never turn or pull the crown while it is wet, soap and shampoo included.

Is there any luminous material on the dial?

No. Seiko specifies none on this reference, so neither the hands nor the baton markers will show in the dark and the watch cannot be read in an unlit room. If telling the time at night without reaching for a light matters to you, choose a reference specified with LumiBrite instead.

What is the crystal made of?

Sapphire. It is a synthetic crystal grown for the purpose and among the hardest materials used for watch glass, which is why it stands up well to the everyday contact that marks a watch face — desk edges, door frames, a bag strap. Hard is not the same as indestructible: a sharp knock against stone or concrete can still chip or crack it. At this case size and price, sapphire is not something you can take for granted, which is part of what makes the specification worth reading.

When will the battery need changing?

Seiko quotes approximately three years. On many Seiko quartz watches the seconds hand begins moving in two-second steps rather than one as the battery runs down, which is the cue to have it replaced; the watch keeps correct time while it does this. Seiko notes that not every calibre carries that indicator, so treat it as a useful sign rather than a guaranteed warning. Bring the watch to any City Chain store for servicing: this case back screws in and has to be resealed correctly, or the watch loses the water resistance it was sold with.

How does 40.2mm sit on the wrist, and can the bracelet be adjusted?

The number that decides it is the 47mm lug-to-lug span, since that is the length crossing your wrist, and it is on the long side relative to a 40.2mm diameter. Against that, 8.4mm of case depth is genuinely slim for a calendar watch and the whole thing comes to 114g. The bracelet takes 20mm between the lugs and is sized by removing links. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet, with your warranty book to hand.

What does the 3-year warranty include?

Buying the SUR341P1 from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer, includes a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Accidental damage, ordinary wear and battery depletion all sit outside it. Keep your warranty card and your proof of purchase, since the watch cannot be submitted for warranty service without both.
