The Seiko Conceptual SSB379P1 carries three things on its dial that get used: a chronograph reading in fifth-of-a-second steps and running to a full 12 hours, a small seconds hand that keeps going independently of it, and a date. A tachymeter scale runs around the bezel, reading speed straight off the chronograph. The case is 41.5mm of stainless steel, 12.1mm deep and 46.5mm from lug to lug, on 22mm lugs, beneath a Hardlex crystal.

Calibre 8T67 is quartz: ±15 seconds a month, and around three years from a battery, which Seiko calculates on roughly an hour of chronograph use a day. The bracelet fastens with a three-fold clasp and push button release, the complete watch weighs 136g, and behind a screw case back Seiko describes the 10 bar rating as reinforced water resistance for daily life — swimming is fine, scuba diving is not.

Why You'll Love It

  • 46.5mm across the lugs keeps a 41.5mm chronograph from reaching over the edge of the wrist, which sub-dial layouts often do.
  • Twelve hours of range on the chronograph, read to a fifth of a second — long enough for a flight, fine enough for a lap.
  • The small seconds hand is independent of the stopwatch, so the watch visibly keeps running with the chronograph reset and sitting still.
  • The bezel carries a tachymeter scale, so the chronograph doubles as a speed calculator: time a measured kilometre and the seconds hand shows the speed directly, no sums required.
  • There is a built-in warning before the battery dies: the small seconds hand starts moving in two-second steps instead of one.

Key Features

  • Chronograph up to 12 hours in 1/5 second increments, with a small seconds hand, a date display and a tachymeter scale on the bezel.
  • Hardlex crystal — Hardlex is Seiko's own crystal material, made in-house and fitted across much of its range.
  • 100-metre water resistance behind a screw case back — Seiko describes it as reinforced water resistance for daily life. Suited to swimming, not to scuba diving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the chronograph and the tachymeter?

The upper pusher does the timing — press once to start, again to stop, and you can repeat that to accumulate elapsed time across several intervals. The lower pusher returns the chronograph hands to zero. Seiko advises resetting it and checking the hands are at zero before you begin. Timing runs to 12 hours in fifth-of-a-second steps and then stops on its own. This calibre has no split-time function, so it measures one running total rather than lap splits. The bezel's tachymeter scale reads speed off that same timing: start the chronograph as you pass the beginning of a measured kilometre or mile, stop it at the end, and the seconds hand indicates how many of those units you would cover in an hour. Because the seconds hand sweeps the scale only once, it reads events finishing inside a minute.

When should I avoid changing the date?

Between 9:00 pm and 3:00 am. Seiko's instructions for the 8T67 set that window because the movement is already engaged with the nightly date change through those hours, and adjusting it then can leave the date failing to advance the following day. Move the hands clear of that window, set the date, then set the time.

Will the bracelet be sized to my wrist?

Yes. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet — bring your warranty book along for the service. The clasp is a three-fold design that opens on a push button release rather than a pin buckle, so it stays closed without a strap hole to wear through. Have it sized in store rather than attempting it yourself.

Is it safe for swimming?

Yes. Seiko describes the 10 bar rating as reinforced water resistance for daily life, which covers swimming and snorkelling as well as rain and handwashing. It does not cover scuba diving — Seiko's manual states plainly that watches marked 10 or 20 bar are not for diving — and the 100-metre figure is a pressure rating rather than a depth to swim to. Two things from the manual are worth following: never turn or pull out the crown while the watch is wet, and keep it out of baths and saunas. Rinse it in fresh water after a swim.

What affects the battery life?

Chronograph use, mostly. Seiko's three-year figure assumes around an hour of timing a day, so leaving the chronograph running for long stretches will shorten it — stop and reset once you have your reading. There is also a useful warning built in: if the small seconds hand starts moving in two-second steps instead of one, the battery is nearly flat. City Chain can replace it at any outlet, and it is worth having the case seals checked at the same time, since the gaskets maintain water resistance as the watch ages.

Is 41.5mm a large watch?

It sits in the normal range for a men's chronograph — chronographs tend to run a little bigger because of the sub-dials. The figure that decides the fit is the 46.5mm lug-to-lug span, since that is what reaches across the wrist, and at 12.1mm deep and 136g complete the watch has some substance to it. Any City Chain outlet can put it on your wrist before you decide.

What does the warranty cover?

Buying the SSB379P1 from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer, includes a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. It does not extend to accidental damage, ordinary wear or battery depletion. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase, as the watch cannot be submitted for warranty service without them.
