The Mühle-Glashütte Teutonia IV BlueMoon is the most atmospheric watch Mühle has ever made. A "blue moon" is the second full moon in a calendar month — a rare event that lent this watch its name and its identity. The midnight blue dial sets the mood immediately: deep, dark, and nocturnal. But the defining detail is the moonphase display, repositioned to a cut-out between 6 and 9 o'clock — closer to the centre of the dial than on any other Mühle, and unlike any standard moonphase placement. This new orbit allowed the moon itself to grow to a proud six millimetres in diameter, appearing as a true supermoon against the 39mm case. Its surface is rendered with lovingly imitated craters, set against a deep blue night sky scattered with small stars.
At 39mm, the BlueMoon is two millimetres smaller than the standard Teutonia IV Moonphase and deliberately designed as a unisex watch. It fits comfortably on smaller wrists without losing presence, and sits elegantly under a shirt cuff without catching. The bright nickel-plated hands and applied indices shimmer against the midnight blue dial, while light azure minute and seconds numerals provide readability without breaking the nocturnal colour scheme. Every design decision serves the same goal: make the dial feel like a night sky with the moon at its centre.
Inside, the SW 288-1 in the Mühle version — a different calibre from the standard Moonphase, purpose-built for this repositioned complication — features the patented woodpecker neck regulation, Mühle rotor, blued screws, and Glashütte solarisation finishing. The movement is tested in six positions and regulated to achieve accuracy between 0 and +8 seconds per day — a precision target that complies with the German chronometer standard, though the BlueMoon is not individually certified. The exhibition caseback reveals what Mühle calls "the dark side of the moon" — the movement working quietly behind the midnight dial.

Key Features
- Repositioned moonphase display — The moon disc sits in a specially shaped cut-out between 6 and 9 o'clock, positioned closer to the dial centre than on the standard Teutonia IV Moonphase. This "new orbit" allowed the moon to grow to six millimetres — a supermoon within the 39mm case. The disc completes one rotation every 59 days, covering two 29.5-day lunar cycles. The crater-detailed moon glows against a deep blue night sky decorated with small stars
- SW 288-1, Mühle Version — A Sellita calibre distinct from the SW 280-1 in the standard Moonphase, purpose-built for the BlueMoon's repositioned complication. Refined in Glashütte with the patented woodpecker neck regulation, Mühle rotor, blued screws, Glashütte solarisation, and perlage finishing. Regulated in six positions to achieve 0 to +8 seconds per day
- Patented woodpecker neck regulation — Developed in 2003, the spring's distinctive shape locks the regulator arm both sideways and downward onto the balance cock, delivering superior shock resistance compared to a traditional swan neck regulator
- Midnight blue dial with light azure numerals — The deep nightblue surface, bright nickel-plated applied indices, and light azure minute and seconds numerals create a layered dial that is atmospheric yet legible. Every colour choice reinforces the nocturnal theme
- 39mm unisex case with bevelled roof bezel and volute-shaped horns — Two millimetres smaller than the standard Teutonia IV Moonphase (41mm), the BlueMoon is deliberately sized for both men and women. The slightly curved horns hug the wrist, and the tops of the horns are finely polished — a detail that can only be executed by hand
- Premium black leather strap with butterfly clasp — 20mm strap with screwed attachment bridges for added security, and a secure folding deployment clasp

The Glashütte Difference
- Glashütte, Saxony — Germany's most storied watchmaking town, home to A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, NOMOS, and Mühle-Glashütte. Every Mühle watch is assembled, regulated, and tested here
- Six generations, one family — Founded by Robert Mühle in 1869 as a maker of precision measuring instruments for Glashütte's watchmakers. The company survived two World Wars, Soviet-era expropriation, and reunification. Now led by Thilo Mühle, with the sixth generation already on board
- Teutonia at 20 — The BlueMoon was released in 2022 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Teutonia collection, the most successful watch family in Mühle's history. It represents the boldest step forward in the collection's evolution — the first Mühle to reposition the moonphase away from the traditional 6 o'clock placement and into a new orbit closer to the centre of the dial
- Patented innovation — The woodpecker neck regulation (2003), Mühle three-quarter plate (2008), and proprietary in-house calibres (MU 9408, MU 9411) demonstrate that this is a manufacturer, not merely an assembler

Frequently Asked Questions
What does "BlueMoon" mean?
A "blue moon" is the second full moon to occur within a single calendar month — a rare astronomical event that happens roughly once every 2.7 years. Mühle chose the name for two reasons: this is the second Teutonia to feature a moonphase display (after the standard Teutonia IV Moonphase), and the midnight blue colour scheme reflects the name quite literally. The rarity of the event mirrors the rarity of a German-made moonphase watch at this price point.
How is the BlueMoon different from the standard Teutonia IV Moonphase?
They are quite different watches despite sharing the Teutonia IV name. The standard Moonphase (M1-44-05) has a 41mm case, a white grained dial, blue PVD lance-shaped hands, and places its moonphase at the traditional 6 o'clock position using the SW 280-1 movement. The BlueMoon (M1-44-62) has a 39mm case, a midnight blue dial, bright nickel-plated hands, and repositions the moonphase to a cut-out between 6 and 9 o'clock — closer to the centre of the dial — using the different SW 288-1 movement. The BlueMoon's moon is also rendered with stars in the night sky, which the standard Moonphase does not have. Choose the standard Moonphase for a brighter, larger daily-wear watch. Choose the BlueMoon for a more atmospheric, intimate, and unisex experience.
Why is the moonphase positioned between 6 and 9 o'clock?
Mühle calls this "pulling the moon into a new orbit." By moving the moonphase from the standard 6 o'clock position toward the centre of the dial, they achieved two things: the display becomes more prominent and visually immersive, and the moon itself could grow to six millimetres in diameter — appearing as a "supermoon" within the 39mm case. This repositioning required a different movement (the SW 288-1) than the standard Moonphase uses, making the BlueMoon a genuinely distinct watch rather than a colour variant.
Is this a unisex watch?
Yes. At 39mm diameter, 11.8mm height, and 48.5mm lug-to-lug, the BlueMoon is deliberately sized for both men and women. The slightly curved volute-shaped horns hug the wrist regardless of size, and the design avoids any overtly masculine styling cues. Mühle positions it explicitly as a unisex model — and the midnight blue colour scheme with nickel-plated accents is equally at home on any wrist.
What does "regulated to 0 to +8 seconds per day" mean?
Every BlueMoon movement is tested in six different positions and adjusted to achieve accuracy within 0 to +8 seconds per day — a precision target that meets the German chronometer standard. This is not an individual observatory certification (like the Teutonia II Chronometer receives), but a factory-applied regulation standard that ensures every BlueMoon performs at a level most watch brands do not advertise, let alone guarantee.
What is the woodpecker neck regulation?
Developed and patented by Mühle-Glashütte in 2003, the woodpecker neck regulation is a further evolution of the traditional Glashütte swan neck fine adjustment. Its specially shaped spring locks the regulator arm both sideways against the fine adjustment screw and downward onto the balance cock. This dual-axis pressure prevents the arm from jumping out of position during shocks. Originally developed for the S.A.R. Rescue-Timer used in German maritime rescue, it is now fitted to every Mühle movement.
Is the BlueMoon available on a bracelet?
Yes. The M1-44-62-MB variant comes on a polished stainless steel bracelet with butterfly clasp. The leather version (this model, M1-44-62-LB) uses a premium black leather strap with screwed attachment bridges and butterfly clasp. Both share the same case, dial, movement, and moonphase complication.
Is this watch made in Germany?
Yes. While the base calibre is Swiss-made (Sellita), it is refined, regulated in six positions, and finished in Mühle-Glashütte's own manufactory in Glashütte, Saxony. The woodpecker neck regulation, Mühle rotor, Glashütte solarisation, perlage finishing, and blued screws are all applied in-house. The case, dial assembly, moonphase module installation, and final quality control are performed in Glashütte.
How long does the power reserve last?
Up to 41 hours when fully wound. The automatic movement is self-winding through wrist motion. If left unworn for roughly two days, the watch will stop and need to be set again. The moonphase display will also need to be re-set to the current lunar phase if the watch stops — this can be done quickly via the crown's quick-set function.
Is this a good gift?
One of the most emotionally resonant gifts in the entire Mühle collection. The midnight blue dial with its cratered moon, starry night sky, and azure numerals creates an atmosphere that goes beyond telling time — it tells a story about looking up. The unisex sizing means it works for anyone, the name "BlueMoon" carries its own poetry, and the exhibition caseback invites a private moment of discovery. An exceptional choice for weddings, anniversaries, milestone birthdays, and any occasion where the gift should carry meaning that lasts longer than the wrapping paper.
