The Citizen NJ0178-81M is a limited edition from Citizen's Mechanical Collection, built around the colour the campaign is named for. Beginning Blue is a light, luminous blue — closer to sky or first light than to navy — and it is carried across the whole watch rather than confined to the dial: blue bezel, blue hands, blue index markers, all matched.

That commitment is what makes it work. Most blue-dial automatics pair the colour with silver hands and a steel bezel; this one runs the blue through every element, which reads as a deliberate design decision instead of a colour option.

Underneath is Citizen's Calibre 8210 automatic with 21 jewels and approximately 40 hours of power reserve, on display through an exhibition caseback. The case is 43mm stainless steel at 12.4mm thick, with a date window at 3 o'clock, luminous hands and markers, hardened mineral glass, and 100-metre water resistance on a matching steel bracelet with a fold-over push-button clasp.

Why You'll Love It

  • It is a limited edition from Citizen's Mechanical Collection. The standard mechanical range runs open production — this one does not, and once the allocation is gone it does not return.
  • Beginning Blue runs through the whole watch: dial, bezel, hands and hour markers all matched. That tonal consistency is unusual at this level and is what separates it from every other blue-dial automatic on the shelf.
  • The blue is light rather than dark — sky-toned instead of navy — which makes it far more distinctive than the deep blues that dominate the category, and considerably more summer-appropriate.
  • The exhibition caseback puts the Calibre 8210 and its oscillating rotor on display. Watching the rotor swing is most of the appeal of owning a mechanical watch, and it is missing from plenty of watches at this price.
  • 100-metre water resistance is a genuine rating — swimming and snorkelling are fine, which is more than most dress-leaning automatics allow.
  • No battery, ever. The watch is powered by the motion of your wrist, so there are no service appointments to remember and nothing to replace.
  • At 43mm it has real presence. If the 40mm Tsuyosa reads as too restrained for you, this is the larger, bolder alternative in the same Citizen mechanical family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a limited edition?

Yes. Citizen released the NJ0178-81M as a limited edition within its Mechanical Collection, separate from the open-production models in the range. Singapore receives a share of that allocation, and once it sells through there is no restock.

What colour is Beginning Blue?

A light, luminous blue — nearer to sky blue than to navy. It is Citizen's name for the shade used across this cross-brand series, and on this reference it runs through the dial, bezel, hands and hour markers rather than sitting on the dial alone.

Is there another Beginning Blue model?

Yes. The CA0770-72M is the Eco-Drive chronograph in the same Beginning Blue series — a 43mm light-powered chronograph rather than a mechanical three-hander. Same colour family, different movement and different function set.

What does "automatic" mean?

An automatic watch is powered by the natural movement of your wrist. A rotor inside the case winds the mainspring as you wear it, so no battery is needed. If left unworn for about two days it will stop and need resetting — simply wear it again to restart it.

How long does the power reserve last?

Approximately 40 hours when fully wound, so the watch keeps running for close to two days after you take it off. Regular daily wear keeps it continuously wound.

How accurate is a mechanical watch?

Mechanical movements are not as precise as quartz by design — expect to reset the time every week or two. The appeal is the engineering, the absence of a battery and the movement you can watch through the caseback.

Does a mechanical watch need servicing?

Yes. Unlike a quartz watch, an automatic has moving parts and lubricants that wear over time. Citizen recommends periodic servicing to keep timekeeping and water resistance within spec. Any City Chain outlet can arrange this — bring your warranty card.

Is the glass sapphire?

No — this model uses mineral glass. It resists everyday knocks well but will pick up fine scratches over years in a way sapphire would not. If sapphire matters to you, the Citizen Tsuyosa and Super Titanium ranges use it as standard.

Will 43mm fit my wrist?

43mm is a large case and suits wrists from roughly 17cm upward. On a wrist under 16.5cm it will read as substantial. If you prefer something more moderate, the 40mm Citizen Tsuyosa models use the same Calibre 8210 in a smaller case.

Can I swim with this watch?

Yes. With 100-metre (10 BAR) water resistance it is suitable for swimming and snorkelling. It is not rated for scuba diving. Avoid operating the crown while the watch is submerged, and rinse with fresh water after saltwater or pool exposure.

Is the bracelet adjustable?

Yes. The stainless steel bracelet can be resized by adding or removing links. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet — bring your warranty book along for the service.

What warranty does this watch come with?

The NJ0178-81M comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Citizen retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service at any City Chain outlet.
