Limited Edition — 4,000 Pieces

In 1982 Seiko built a digital watch that changed modes by turning its bezel. It was called the Rotocall, the mechanism was a rotary switch, and Seiko notes that it found a following among astronauts. The Seiko HFL001P1 brings that idea back for the company's 145th anniversary — the bezel is still the control, and turning it still moves you through the functions.

Seiko was founded in 1881, and the anniversary collection is split into three design themes. This reference belongs to Series 3, built around Edo-murasaki — Edo purple — which Seiko uses to mark the traditions carried from ancient Edo through to modern-day Tokyo. Here it appears as a purple aluminium bezel set against a black case and bracelet, on a 37.0mm digital watch that runs a 100-hour chronograph timing to 1/100th of a second, an alarm, a timer, a second time zone and a calendar programmed to 2074.

Why You'll Love It

  • The bezel is the interface. Rather than cycling through modes by pressing a button repeatedly, you turn the bezel — the idea Seiko introduced on the 1982 Rotocall and has revived here.
  • A chronograph that runs to 100 hours and resolves to 1/100th of a second. That is a genuinely wide range for a wristwatch, from a sprint split to a four-day event.
  • Edo purple against black. The anniversary colour appears on the aluminium bezel alone, which keeps the rest of the watch wearable rather than turning it into a novelty.
  • A limited run of 4,000 pieces, with LIMITED EDITION engraved on the case back.
  • 37.0mm across and only 10.6mm thick, at 108 grams. This is a compact, light watch that sits flat under a cuff.
  • Internal LED illumination, so the display is readable in the dark at the press of a button rather than needing to be charged by light first.
  • The full auto calendar is programmed through to 31 December 2074 — no adjusting for short months for the next fifty years.
  • Three years of battery life with a warning function that tells you when it is running down, rather than simply stopping.
  • An alarm, a 100-minute timer and a dual-time function alongside the chronograph, all reached from the same bezel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Rotocall?

A Seiko digital watch from 1982 whose defining feature was the rotary switch — a mechanism that let the wearer change modes by turning the bezel rather than pressing through them. Seiko notes that the original found a following among astronauts. This reference is based on that design.

How does the rotary switch work?

You turn the bezel to move between the watch's modes — chronograph, timer, alarm, dual time and so on — instead of cycling through them with a button. It is a faster way of getting to the function you want, and the reason the original stood out in 1982.

What is the Seiko 145th anniversary, and why purple?

Seiko was founded in 1881, which makes 2026 its 145th year. The anniversary collection is split into three series, each with its own theme — gold accents, Seiko Blue, and Edo purple. This watch belongs to the third, and Seiko describes Edo-murasaki as reflecting the traditions passed on from ancient Edo to modern-day Tokyo and the spirit of creativity.

How far does the chronograph go?

Up to 100 hours, measured in increments of 1/100th of a second. That covers a sprint at one end and a multi-day event at the other, which is a wider range than most chronographs offer. A separate counter function sits alongside it.

What is the difference between the timer and the alarm?

The timer counts down from a duration you set, up to 100 minutes in 1-minute steps — useful for anything with a fixed length. The alarm is a single-time alarm, meaning it sounds at a specific clock time rather than after an interval.

Can I read it in the dark?

Yes. The watch has internal LED illumination, so the display lights at the press of a button. Unlike a luminous dial it does not need to be charged by light first, so it works just as well after a full day indoors.

Will I ever need to adjust the date?

Not for short months or leap years. The full auto calendar is programmed through to 31 December 2074, so it handles month lengths and leap years on its own. You will still need to set it when the battery is changed.

How long does the battery last?

Approximately three years. There is also a battery life warning function, so the watch signals when the battery is running down rather than simply stopping one morning. City Chain can replace the battery at any outlet.

How accurate is it?

Seiko states ±20 seconds per month for Calibre A824. In practice that means checking it a few times a year rather than weekly.

Can I swim and shower with it?

Yes. At 100 metres this handles swimming, snorkelling and showering without concern, though Seiko gives it no diver's designation, so it should not be used for scuba diving. Avoid operating the buttons or turning the bezel while it is submerged, rinse it in fresh water after the sea or a pool, and have the case seals checked when the battery is replaced.

How does 37mm wear?

Compactly. At 37.0mm across, 10.6mm thick and 108 grams this is a small, light watch by current standards, and the 43.5mm lug-to-lug keeps it well within the width of most wrists. It suits smaller wrists and sits flat enough to go under a cuff. Any City Chain outlet can put it on your wrist.

Can the bracelet be adjusted?

Yes. Links can be added or removed to size it, and the three-fold clasp opens on a push button release rather than a pin buckle. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet; bring your warranty book along for the service.

What warranty does this watch come with?

The HFL001P1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.
