Limited Edition — 9,999 Pieces

Seiko was founded in 1881, and in 2026 it marks 145 years. The anniversary collection runs across King Seiko, Prospex, Astron, Presage, 5 Sports and Seiko Selection, divided into three series with three different design themes. The Seiko 5 Sports HDB003K1 belongs to Series 3, built around Edo-murasaki — Edo purple — a colour Seiko uses here to mark the traditions carried from old Edo through to modern-day Tokyo, the city where Kintaro Hattori opened his shop.

The dial takes that purple and the Seiko logo is picked out in gold lettering. Underneath, the watch is a full SKX-series 5 Sports: Calibre 4R36 automatic with day and date, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a 42.5mm stainless steel case on a three-row bracelet, and 100 metres of water resistance. The case back is see-through, so the movement is visible, and it is engraved LIMITED EDITION — this run is capped at 9,999 pieces.

Why You'll Love It

  • Edo purple is not a colour Seiko uses often, and never casually. It is the theme of one of the three 145th anniversary series, chosen to carry the traditions of old Edo into the Tokyo Seiko was founded in.
  • Gold lettering on the logo against a purple dial. A small piece of anniversary detailing that separates this from a standard 5 Sports at a glance.
  • A limited run of 9,999 pieces, with LIMITED EDITION engraved on the case back.
  • No battery. Calibre 4R36 winds itself from the motion of your wrist, shows the day and the date, and can be wound by hand when it has been sitting.
  • The see-through case back leaves the movement visible — the part of a mechanical watch most owners never get to see, and here it sits behind an anniversary engraving.
  • The unidirectional bezel turns one way only, so if it is knocked while you are timing something it shortens the reading rather than extending it.
  • LumiBrite on the hands and indexes, charged by light and readable in the dark without a battery drain.
  • A three-row bracelet with a secure lock on the clasp — a second catch that holds it shut if the push buttons are pressed accidentally.
  • 100 metres of water resistance, which covers swimming and showering without a second thought.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Seiko 145th anniversary?

Seiko was founded in 1881, which makes 2026 its 145th year. Seiko describes its approach since then as watchmaking to meet society's evolving needs, following founder Kintaro Hattori's principle of being always one step ahead of the rest. The anniversary collection spans King Seiko, Prospex, Astron, Presage, 5 Sports and Seiko Selection.

Why is the dial purple?

The anniversary collection is split into three series, each with its own design theme — gold accents for success and prosperity, Seiko Blue, and Edo purple. This watch belongs to the third, and Seiko describes Edo-murasaki as reflecting the traditions passed on from ancient Edo to modern-day Tokyo.

Is this a diver's watch?

No, and it is worth being clear about it. The rotating bezel and the SKX case shape both come from Seiko's diving heritage, and the 100-metre rating covers swimming, snorkelling and showering comfortably. But Seiko does not give this reference a diver's designation, so it should not be used for scuba diving. If you want a watch rated for diving, look to the Prospex collection.

What is the rotating bezel for?

Timing an interval. Line the bezel's zero marker up with the minute hand when you start, and the elapsed minutes can be read straight off the bezel afterwards. It turns in one direction only, so a knock can only make the reading longer than reality, never shorter — the safety principle behind every unidirectional bezel.

How does the automatic movement work?

A weighted rotor inside Calibre 4R36 turns as your wrist moves, winding the mainspring. Wearing it through a normal day keeps it running. You can also wind it by hand using the crown, which is the quickest way to start it from cold.

What happens if I do not wear it for a few days?

It stops. The power reserve is approximately 41 hours from a full wind, so a watch set down on Friday evening will usually have stopped by Sunday. Wind it by hand, reset the time, day and date, and carry on. This is normal for a mechanical watch and does no harm.

Can I swim and shower with it?

Yes. At 100 metres this handles swimming, snorkelling and showering without concern. Rinse it in fresh water after the sea or a pool, and have the case seals checked at service intervals, since gaskets are what maintain the rating over the years rather than the case itself.

How does 42.5mm wear?

Substantially. This is a broad watch at 13.9mm thick and 187 grams on the bracelet, so it has real presence on the wrist. The 46.0mm lug-to-lug is the more useful figure for fit and is shorter than the diameter suggests, which keeps it wearable on medium wrists. Any City Chain outlet can put it on your wrist.

Can the bracelet be adjusted?

Yes. Links can be added or removed to size it, and the three-fold clasp has a push button release with a secure lock — a second catch that holds the clasp shut if the buttons are pressed by accident. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet; bring your warranty book along for the service.

What can I see through the case back?

The movement itself — the balance wheel oscillating, the rotor turning as you move, the gear train running. On this reference the case back also carries the LIMITED EDITION engraving that marks it as part of the anniversary run.

Does a mechanical watch need servicing?

Yes, eventually. A mechanical movement runs on lubricated moving parts that wear over years of use, so a service every few years keeps it running to specification and is also when the case gaskets are replaced. City Chain can arrange servicing through Seiko's authorised service network — bring your warranty book.

What warranty does this watch come with?

The HDB003K1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.

Where can I see the rest of the range?

The full Seiko 5 line-up is in our Seiko 5 collection, and City Chain outlets across Singapore carry the range in store.
