Seiko Prospex SPB379J1 — Alpinist Mechanical GMT
The Seiko Prospex SPB379J1 is the Alpinist with GMT — the first time Seiko fitted a mechanical GMT movement to the Alpinist case, and a significant evolution of a design that has been trusted by Japanese mountain climbers since 1959. The 6R54 calibre, which made its Prospex debut in the HBC001J1 and HBC002J1 dive GMT watches, here takes on a different context entirely: not the ocean, but the mountain, where multi-day expeditions across time zones demand a watch that can simultaneously reference home time while reading local. The black dial, red-tipped GMT hand, and 24-hour scale on the inner ring give the SPB379J1 an immediate visual logic in the field — and a character that the standard three-hand Alpinist variants do not share.
The inner compass ring remains — the Alpinist's defining functional feature since 1959, independently rotatable for bearing heading reference in the field. The screw-down crown provides weather-resistant protection, the curved sapphire crystal with super-hard coated stainless case handles the rigours of outdoor use, and Lumibrite on the hands and hour markers ensures readability in the pre-dawn and low-light conditions that mountain and wilderness environments regularly present. The black leather strap completes a classic field watch aesthetic. At 39.5mm and 13.6mm, it wears with the compact, purposeful presence that has always defined the Alpinist.

Why You'll Love It
The SPB379J1 is the Alpinist for the traveller and the expeditioner — the one who needs to know both times without looking at a phone, and who wants the compass ring as a navigation reference when the phone battery has died and the clouds are covering the stars. The 6R54 GMT movement is the same calibre that Seiko uses in the professional HBC dive GMT watches, brought to the Alpinist's field context: a mechanical complication that earns its place in the lineup rather than adding complexity for its own sake. The 39.5mm case wears with the discreet, functional character that field watches require, the black leather strap is the most natural companion to the black dial, and the overall execution is a watch that performs as well in a business meeting across time zones as it does on a multi-day mountain route.
SPB379J1 vs SPB117J1 — Alpinist GMT or Alpinist Compass?
Both models share the Alpinist case shape, compass inner ring, and the core field watch brief. The key difference is the movement and the added function. The SPB379J1 has the 6R54 mechanical GMT — a second time zone hand, 24-hour scale, and 72-hour power reserve. The SPB117J1 has the 6R35 with a 70-hour reserve — no GMT hand, but a dedicated compass inner ring focus and a longer established place in the Alpinist lineup. If GMT is needed, the SPB379J1 is the only Alpinist choice. If compass navigation without the travel complication is the priority, the SPB117J1 delivers it.
About the Seiko Alpinist
The Seiko Alpinist was born in 1959 — a watch designed for Japan's mountain climbers at a time when domestic watchmaking was finding its identity in extreme environments. The original Alpinist established the inner compass ring, the Arabic numerals, and the compact case proportions that define every Alpinist to this day. Over sixty-five years the design has been refined but never fundamentally altered, because the original solved the problem it was designed for with precision and elegance. The SPB379J1 adds the first mechanical GMT to that story — a complication the original Alpinist never needed because multi-day international expeditions were not yet the context. They are now.
The Seiko Prospex Story
Prospex is a combination of the words "Professional" and "Specifications." Seiko Prospex timepieces are designed to be practical, reliable, and durable — built to meet the high standards required in extreme environments for sports lovers and adventure seekers alike. The story begins in 1881, when Kintaro Hattori founded a clock and watch shop in Ginza, Tokyo — the business that would become the Seiko of today. The Alpinist has been part of the Prospex story since before the Prospex name existed — a mountain watch that predates the dive watch, the field watch, and the GPS solar by decades. The SPB379J1 adds a new chapter: the first mechanical GMT in sixty-five years of Alpinist history.
