City Chain Singapore is always striving to bring you the latest and best timepieces and watches from around the world. With our new City Chain Primo outlet opening at Vivocity, we’ve also introduced 3 high-quality watch brands to our roster: BALL, Frederique Constant, and Oris.
Find out more about each of these premium brands below:
The origins of this famous American watchmaking company is actually tied to the famous Kipton Disaster (or Kipton Train Wreck) of 1891. The train wreck was caused by one of the train Engineers’ watches stopping without him noticing, leading to tragic consequences. In the wake of the crash, Chief Inspector Webb C. Ball was appointed to lead the investigation. Ball was the one who would put into place strict and uniform timekeeping standards for railroads - beginning the highly-accurate reputation of railroad watches and railroad time.
Ball would later found the BALL Watch company in 1891, with his watches being held to an extremely high “RR Standard” (“Rail Road Standard”). Till today, BALL watches still bear the RR insignia, and have to meet a set of strict criteria before receiving the label. Their timepieces are known for their dedication to accuracy, precision, and reliability, and bear names such as “Engineer” and “Trainmaster” to pay homage to early American railroad pioneers.
Founded in 1988, Frederique Constant is one of the newest luxury timepiece brands around. Despite their relatively recent introduction, this Swiss brand has already become famous worldwide for their dedication to affordable luxury and cutting-edge design. Frederique Constant stands out from other watchmakers with their combination of computer-aided design software and handmade assembly to produce truly intricate and luxurious watches that can stand the test of time.
Each Frederique Constant watch comes with minute yet delicately assembled details to make even a simple watch stand out. The Slimline Heartbeat Automatic collection includes a small window in the watch face, allowing you to see the jewelled inner mechanisms of the watch. Though many other watch brands have adopted similar ‘window’ designs today, Frederique Constant was one of the first brands to do so in 1994 and helped start this now-popular trend.
Oris was founded in the Swiss town of Hölstein in 1904, and their original intention was to create high-quality yet affordable timepieces that would balance quality Swiss watchmaking with excellent value. You rarely find any Oris timepiece costing more than $4,000 - making them one of the most consistently affordable luxury watchmakers in the world, and a great option for your first luxury watch. Oris has also collaborated with brands such as Japanese denim company Momotaro, and produced exclusive tributes to pioneers such as Roberto Clemente.
Of the various Oris collections, the Big Crown is by far the most well known. The Big Crown was introduced in 1938, and was named after the oversized crown characteristic of its design. This was an intentional design choice to help pilots adjust their Oris watches even with leather gloves on, but the Big Crown has become a well-respected name of its own worldwide. Coming in both men’s and women’s sizing and a variety of colourways, the Big Crown is a classic design that remains timelessly fashionable over 80 years later.
