The Seiko SSB383P1 is the dress-leaning version of the classic chronograph: a cream dial with polished applied indices, a tachymeter scale around the edge, and a black leather strap in place of a steel bracelet. Warm dial against dark leather is a considerably softer combination than black-on-steel, and it is the reason this reference works under a jacket where a sports chronograph looks out of place.
Inside is Seiko's Calibre 8T67, a quartz chronograph movement accurate to ±15 seconds per month with roughly three years from a battery. It measures up to 12 hours in 1/5-second increments, carries a separate small seconds hand so you can tell at a glance the watch is running, and shows the date. The stainless steel case is 41.5mm across, 12.1mm thick and 46.5mm lug-to-lug, with a screw case back and a Hardlex crystal, rated to 100 metres. On leather the whole watch weighs 76 grams — a little over half what the same case weighs on a steel bracelet.

Why You'll Love It
- ±15 seconds per month. That is quartz accuracy — you set it and forget it, where a mechanical chronograph would need resetting weekly.
- A working 12-hour stopwatch measured to a fifth of a second. Not a decorative sub-dial layout: the pushers do what they look like they do.
- The small seconds hand runs continuously, so you can see the watch is alive without starting the chronograph. It is the detail that separates a real chronograph dial from a three-hander with extra circles printed on it.
- Cream on black leather is the dressiest a chronograph gets without losing its function. It reads as a watch chosen deliberately rather than as default sports steel.
- 41.5mm with a 46.5mm lug-to-lug means the case is broad but short. It covers the wrist without hanging over the edges the way many chronographs of this diameter do.
- The tachymeter scale on the bezel turns the chronograph into a speed calculator — a function most people never use and every chronograph owner enjoys knowing is there.
- 76 grams. On leather this is barely there compared with the same case on a metal bracelet, which matters if you have found chronographs uncomfortably heavy before.
- 22mm lug width, which is a widely available strap size. Brown leather, suede or a steel bracelet each take this somewhere different.

Key Features
- Calibre 8T67 quartz chronograph movement — accurate to ±15 seconds per month, with a battery life of approximately three years.
- Chronograph measuring up to 12 hours in 1/5-second increments — start, stop and reset from the pushers either side of the crown.
- Small seconds hand — a continuously running seconds display independent of the chronograph, so the main sub-dial layout stays readable whether the stopwatch is running or not.
- Date display — set from the crown.
- Tachymeter scale — a fixed scale for calculating speed over a measured distance using the chronograph.
- Stainless steel case — 41.5mm across, 12.1mm thick, 46.5mm lug-to-lug, with a screw case back. Total weight on the leather strap is 76 grams.
- Hardlex crystal — Seiko's own hardened mineral glass, more shatter-resistant than sapphire though less scratch-resistant.
- Black cow leather strap — a 22mm genuine leather band, the width most widely served by replacement straps.
- 100-metre water resistance — rated for swimming and recreational water activity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the chronograph?
The upper pusher starts and stops the timing. The lower pusher resets everything to zero once stopped. The chronograph measures up to 12 hours in 1/5-second increments, and the elapsed time is read across the sub-dials rather than from the main hands, which keep showing the time of day throughout.
Which hand is the small seconds and which is the chronograph?
The small seconds hand runs continuously on its own sub-dial and tells you the watch is working. The chronograph seconds hand sits still at zero until you start the stopwatch, then sweeps from the centre. If you have bought a chronograph before and found the centre seconds hand parked and motionless, this is why — that is normal, not a fault.
What is the tachymeter scale for?
It converts elapsed time into speed over a known distance. Start the chronograph as you pass a marker, stop it one kilometre later, and the number the chronograph seconds hand points to on the scale is your average speed in kilometres per hour. It works for any unit as long as the distance is one of them, and it only reads speeds fast enough to cover the distance in under a minute.
How accurate is it?
±15 seconds per month, which is the standard Seiko quotes for this movement. In practice that means adjusting it once or twice a year rather than weekly. A mechanical watch would drift that much in a couple of days.
How long does the battery last?
Approximately three years. Running the chronograph frequently draws more power and can shorten that. When it needs replacing, bring it to any City Chain outlet — the screw case back means it is not a job to attempt at home, and an improperly resealed case loses its water resistance.
Is Hardlex the same as sapphire?
No. Hardlex is Seiko's own hardened mineral glass. It resists shattering better than sapphire, but it scratches more easily — sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and mineral glass sits well below that. If a scratch-free crystal is your priority, look at models specified with sapphire instead.
How does 41.5mm wear?
Broad but short, and light. The 46.5mm lug-to-lug is compact for a 41.5mm chronograph, so the case sits within the wrist rather than over the edges, and at 76 grams on leather it is roughly half the weight of the same watch on a steel bracelet. That combination suits people who like the look of a chronograph but not the heft. Try it on at any City Chain outlet if you are unsure.
Can I swim with it?
The watch is rated to 100 metres, so the case handles swimming and recreational water activity. The leather strap does not — repeated soaking will stiffen, stain and eventually crack it. If you plan to swim in it regularly, fit a rubber or steel band in the 22mm width and keep the leather for dry wear. Never operate the crown or the chronograph pushers while the watch is wet.
Can I change the strap?
Yes. The lug width is 22mm, a widely available size, so leather, rubber, mesh and steel bracelets all fit. A steel bracelet turns this into a considerably sportier watch; a brown or tan leather strap warms the cream dial further.
How do I look after the leather strap?
Keep it dry. Leather is the part of this watch most likely to need replacing, and moisture is what shortens its life — sweat, rain and pool water all break the fibres down over time. Wipe it after a humid day, let it dry away from direct heat, and do not fasten it so tightly that it creases at the same point every day. A worn strap is an inexpensive replacement, not a repair.
What warranty does this watch come with?
The SSB383P1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.
