The Seiko Conceptual SSB419P1 is the most compact chronograph in this part of the range at 39.5mm, and one of the few fitted with a sapphire crystal. That combination is unusual: most chronographs at this level run larger and use mineral glass, so a 39.5mm case with a scratch-resistant crystal answers a request that comes up constantly and is rarely met.

Is 39.5mm small for a chronograph?
It is at the compact end, and deliberately so. Most chronographs sit between 41mm and 44mm because the sub-dials need room, so a 39.5mm case is the exception rather than the rule. Is sapphire better than mineral glass?

Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, well above the Hardlex mineral glass Seiko fits to many chronographs at this level, so it keeps a clear face over years of daily wear. Mineral glass is the more shatter-resistant of the two under heavy impact, so it is a genuine trade rather than a straight upgrade — but for most owners, scratches are the wear you actually see.
How do I use the chronograph?
The upper pusher starts and stops the timing, and the lower pusher resets it to zero once stopped. Elapsed time is read from the sub-dials, measured in 1/5-second increments, while the main hands continue showing the time of day.
What is split time and how do I use it?
Split time lets you take a reading partway through without ending the measurement. While the chronograph is running, the lower pusher freezes the display so you can read an intermediate time; pressing it again returns the hands to the count, which has continued in the background. It is what you use for lap times, or for timing one stage of something longer.
What is the tachymetre for?
It converts elapsed time into speed over a known distance. Start the chronograph as you pass a marker, stop it one kilometre later, and the number the chronograph hand points to on the scale is your average speed in kilometres per hour. It works for any unit as long as the distance is one of them, and it only reads speeds fast enough to cover that distance in under a minute.
How accurate is it?
±15 seconds per month, which is the figure Seiko quotes for this movement. In practice that means adjusting it once or twice a year rather than weekly.
How long does the battery last?
Three years. Running the chronograph frequently draws more power and can shorten that. When it needs replacing, bring it to any City Chain outlet rather than opening it yourself — an improperly resealed case loses its water resistance.
Can I swim with it?
Yes. At 100-metre water resistance it handles swimming and recreational water activity. It is not a diver's watch and is not rated for scuba diving. Never operate the crown or the chronograph pushers while the watch is wet — that is the most common way water gets into a chronograph.
Is the bracelet adjustable?
