The Seiko Conceptual SSB387P1 is built in titanium — case and bracelet both — and that single decision changes how it wears. A 41.6mm chronograph on a full metal bracelet would normally weigh around 150 grams. This one weighs 89 grams. It is the reason people who have found chronographs too heavy to wear all day get on with this watch.

The dial is blue with baton markers and LumiBrite on the hands and hour markers. Calibre 8T67 drives a stopwatch measuring up to 12 hours in 1/5-second increments with split-time capability, alongside a small seconds hand and a date, and holds ±15 seconds per month with approximately three years from a battery. The case is 14.2mm thick and 49.1mm lug-to-lug, protected by a curved Hardlex crystal, closed with a screw case back and rated to 100 metres.

Why You'll Love It

  • 89 grams, in titanium, on a full metal bracelet. That is the headline. A steel chronograph of similar size sits closer to 150 grams, and you feel the difference within an hour of putting it on.
  • Titanium case and titanium bracelet — not a titanium case on a steel band, which is how the weight saving usually gets diluted.
  • A 12-hour chronograph with split-time capability. You can time most of a working day on one measurement, and take an intermediate reading without stopping the count.
  • ±15 seconds per month. Set it and forget it, where a mechanical chronograph would drift that much in a couple of days.
  • The curved Hardlex crystal follows the shape of the case rather than sitting flat on top of it, which is part of why a 14.2mm case does not read as slab-sided.
  • A blue dial with baton markers and LumiBrite on the hands and hour markers — colour without loss of legibility, day or night.
  • Three years from a battery, then a straightforward replacement. No winding, no charging, no routine.
  • 20mm lug width, a widely available strap size, so leather or rubber is an easy change if you want a different look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose titanium over steel?

Weight, almost entirely. This watch comes in at 89 grams complete with its titanium bracelet, where a comparable steel chronograph on a steel bracelet sits closer to 150 grams. Over a full day that difference is the one you actually notice. The trade is that titanium marks a little more readily than hardened steel, so expect it to pick up fine surface marks over time.

How do I use the chronograph?

The upper pusher starts and stops the timing, and the lower pusher resets it to zero once stopped. The stopwatch measures up to 12 hours in 1/5-second increments, and the elapsed time is read from the sub-dials while the main hands continue showing the time of day.

What is split time and how do I use it?

Split time lets you take a reading partway through without ending the measurement. While the chronograph is running, the lower pusher freezes the display so you can read an intermediate time; pressing it again returns the hands to the count, which has continued in the background. It is what you use for lap times, or for timing one stage of something longer.

Which hand is the small seconds and which is the chronograph?

The small seconds hand runs continuously on its own sub-dial and tells you the watch is working. The chronograph hand sits still at zero until you start the stopwatch. If you have owned a chronograph before and found a seconds hand parked and motionless, this is why — that is normal, not a fault.

How does 41.6mm wear?

Bigger on paper than on the wrist. The case is 14.2mm thick and 49.1mm lug-to-lug, both of which are substantial figures, so this is not a discreet watch — but at 89 grams it carries almost no weight, which is the opposite of what those dimensions usually mean. If you have tried larger chronographs and found them fatiguing rather than too wide, this is worth putting on. Any City Chain outlet can arrange that.

Is Hardlex the same as sapphire?

No. Hardlex is Seiko's own hardened mineral glass, here shaped to curve with the case. It resists shattering better than sapphire, but it scratches more easily — sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and mineral glass sits well below that. If a scratch-free crystal is your priority, Seiko fits sapphire to other references in the Conceptual range, including the SSB459P1.

How accurate is it?

±15 seconds per month, which is the figure Seiko quotes for this movement. In practice that means adjusting it once or twice a year rather than weekly.

How long does the battery last?

Approximately three years, using an SR936SW cell. Running the chronograph frequently draws more power and can shorten that. When it needs replacing, bring it to any City Chain outlet rather than opening it yourself — the screw case back has to be resealed correctly or the watch loses its water resistance.

Can I swim with it?

Yes. At 100-metre water resistance it handles swimming and recreational water activity. It is not a diver's watch and is not rated for scuba diving. Never operate the crown or the chronograph pushers while the watch is wet — that is the most common way water gets into a chronograph.

Is the bracelet adjustable?

Yes. Links can be added or removed to size the titanium bracelet, and the three-fold clasp opens with a push button release. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet — bring your warranty book along for the service.

Can I change the bracelet for a strap?

Yes. The lug width is 20mm, a widely available size, so leather, rubber and mesh straps all fit. Bear in mind that a leather strap will not save much weight here — the titanium bracelet is already light — but it will change the look considerably.

What warranty does this watch come with?

The SSB387P1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.
