What is split time and how do I use it?
Split time lets you take a reading partway through without ending the measurement. While the chronograph is running, the lower pusher freezes the display so you can read an intermediate time; pressing it again returns the hands to the count, which has continued in the background. It is what you use for lap times, or for timing one stage of something longer.
What is the tachymetre for?
It converts elapsed time into speed over a known distance. Start the chronograph as you pass a marker, stop it one kilometre later, and the number the chronograph hand points to on the scale is your average speed in kilometres per hour. It works for any unit as long as the distance is one of them, and it only reads speeds fast enough to cover that distance in under a minute.
Which hand is the small seconds and which is the chronograph?
The small seconds hand runs continuously on its own sub-dial and tells you the watch is working. The chronograph hand sits still at zero until you start the stopwatch. If you have owned a chronograph before and found a seconds hand parked and motionless, this is why — that is normal, not a fault.
How does 43.9mm wear?
This is a large watch and it is meant to be. The lug-to-lug measurement is 51.1mm, which is the figure that decides whether a watch overhangs the wrist, and it is long — if your wrist is under about 17cm, try it on before committing. What does the hard coating do?
It is a surface treatment applied over the stainless steel that raises the hardness of the outer layer, so the case resists everyday scuffs better than bare steel. Because it is a surface treatment rather than a solid material, a hard enough impact against a sharp edge can still mark it. Avoid abrasives and solvents.
Is Hardlex the same as sapphire?
No. Hardlex is Seiko's own hardened mineral glass. It resists shattering better than sapphire, which suits a watch built for active wear, but it scratches more easily — sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and mineral glass sits well below that. If a scratch-free crystal is your priority, Seiko fits sapphire to other references in the Conceptual range, including the SSB459P1.
How long does the battery last?
Approximately three years, using an SR936SW cell. Running the chronograph frequently draws more power and can shorten that. When it needs replacing, bring it to any City Chain outlet rather than opening it yourself — the screw case back has to be resealed correctly or the watch loses its water resistance.
Can I change the strap?
Yes. The lug width is 22mm, one of the most widely available sizes, so leather, rubber, mesh and steel bands all fit. A steel bracelet turns this into a considerably heavier and more formal watch; a leather strap softens it without adding much weight.
