The Seiko Astron SSJ013J1 is the all-titanium, blue-dialled member of the Crystal Box series — and the most restrained of the four. The name works on two levels. The dial carries a 'crystal box' pressed pattern, a fine rectangular embossing that references the quartz crystal at the heart of the original 1969 Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch. And the glass above it is a box-shaped sapphire crystal that sits raised slightly proud of the bezel, giving the watch a geometric side profile you notice more on the wrist than in photographs.

Where the rose gold reference uses colour on the bezel, the SSJ013J1 keeps everything in titanium and lets the sapphire blue dial do the work. The polygonal bezel, case and bracelet all carry a super-hard coating, keeping the watch light at 41.2mm across and 12.0mm thick. Inside is Calibre 3X62, a GPS Solar three-hander that reads satellite signal to find its own time zone and runs entirely on light — no battery changes, and nothing to reset when you land.

Why You'll Love It

  • Blue against bare titanium is the cleanest combination in the Crystal Box range. Nothing competes with the dial — the case, bezel and bracelet stay monochrome and let the colour carry the watch.
  • The pressed crystal box pattern gives the dial depth that a flat colour cannot. It shifts between light and shadow as your wrist moves, so the blue reads differently through the day.
  • It sets itself. The watch reads GPS satellite signal to identify your time zone and adjust the time accordingly, so travel does not mean fiddling with the crown.
  • Light alone powers it — approximately six months of running from a full charge, with a power save mode of around two years. There is no battery to replace.
  • Titanium with a super-hard coating gives you a 41.2mm case that wears lighter than steel and holds its finish better than untreated titanium.
  • At 12.0mm thick and 48.6mm lug-to-lug, this is one of the more wearable GPS watches under a shirt cuff — the technology does not come with the usual bulk penalty.
  • The perpetual calendar runs correctly to 28 February 2100, so the date never needs correcting for short months or leap years.

Key Features

  • Calibre 3X62 GPS Solar movement — receives signals from the GPS satellite network to adjust time zone and time automatically, with manual time adjustment available when you want it. Stated accuracy is ±15 seconds per month without a GPS signal.
  • Sapphire blue dial with 'crystal box' pressed pattern — a rectangular embossed texture across the dial, referencing the quartz crystal that made the original 1969 Astron possible.
  • Polygonal titanium bezel — the faceted bezel shape introduced with the Crystal Box series, finished in titanium to match the case and bracelet.
  • Titanium case and bracelet with super-hard coating — lighter than stainless steel, with a surface treatment that raises hardness against everyday scuffing.
  • Box-shaped sapphire crystal with super-clear coating — a raised, scratch-resistant crystal that sits slightly proud of the bezel. Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, and the coating cuts reflections.
  • Perpetual calendar to 28 February 2100 — the date display adjusts itself for short months and leap years.
  • Power reserve indicator, power save and overcharge prevention — the dial shows remaining charge, the movement parks itself to conserve energy in the dark, and it wakes and corrects itself on exposure to light.
  • Satellite acquisition and reception result displays — the watch tells you whether it is searching, and whether the last connection succeeded.
  • In-flight mode — a function that prevents GPS signal reception while you are airborne.
  • LumiBrite on hands and indexes — charges under light and reads clearly in the dark without drawing power.
  • Three-fold clasp with push-button release and 100-metre water resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'Crystal Box' mean?

Two things. The dial carries a pressed rectangular pattern inspired by quartz crystal structure — a reference to the original 1969 Seiko Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch. And the glass is a box-shaped sapphire crystal that sits raised slightly above the bezel, giving the watch a geometric side profile.

How does this compare to the other Crystal Box models?

All share the same 41.2mm titanium case, Calibre 3X62 and box-shaped sapphire crystal. The SSJ013J1 is the sapphire blue dial with an all-titanium bezel — the most understated of the range. The SSJ014J1 pairs a grey dial with a rose gold-tone bezel for a warmer, more decorative look. The SSJ015J1 goes the other way with a black dial and black-coated case. What does GPS Solar actually do?

The watch receives signals from GPS satellites to identify your location, then adjusts its time zone and time to match. Manual time adjustment is also available. All the energy for this comes from light striking the dial, so there is nothing to plug in and no app to pair with.

Do I ever need to change the battery?

No. The SSJ013J1 charges from any light source into a rechargeable cell. A full charge runs the watch for approximately six months, and the power save function extends that to around two years when it is left in the dark. Everyday wear under daylight and indoor lighting keeps it topped up.

How accurate is it if it cannot reach a satellite?

Seiko states ±15 seconds per month without receiving a GPS signal, at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C. The watch corrects itself as soon as it next reaches the network, so drift rarely has a chance to accumulate. A reception result display tells you whether the last connection succeeded.

Can I wear it on a flight?

Yes. The movement includes a function that prevents GPS signal reception, commonly used as an in-flight mode, so the watch will not attempt to connect while airborne. Switch it off after landing and let it pick up the local time zone.

How does 41.2mm wear?

Comfortably for most wrists. The lug-to-lug measurement is 48.6mm and the case is 12.0mm thick, which is slim for a GPS watch, and the titanium construction takes weight out of the equation. It fits under a shirt cuff more easily than the larger Astron chronograph references. Try it on at any City Chain outlet if you are between sizes.

How durable is the finish?

The titanium case, bezel and bracelet carry Seiko's super-hard coating, which raises surface hardness against the everyday marks that untreated titanium picks up easily. It is a surface treatment, so a hard enough impact against a sharp edge can still leave a mark. Avoid abrasives and chemicals such as chlorine and perfume, and rinse with fresh water after saltwater or pool exposure.

Can I swim with this watch?

Yes. At 100-metre water resistance it is rated for swimming and recreational water activity. It is not a diver's watch and is not rated for scuba diving. Do not operate the crown while the watch is submerged.

How is this different from the Astron chronograph models?

The SSJ013J1 is a three-hand watch with a date, built on Calibre 3X62 — cleaner dial, thinner case, more dress-leaning. The larger Astron references on Calibre 5X83 add a dual-time display and a 12-hour chronograph in a 44.1mm case. Choose this one for wearability and the dial; choose those for the extra complications.

Is the bracelet adjustable?

Yes. Links can be added or removed to size the titanium bracelet, and the three-fold clasp has a push-button release. City Chain offers complimentary bracelet sizing at any outlet — bring your warranty book along for the service.

What warranty does this watch come with?

The SSJ013J1 comes with a 3-year warranty when purchased from City Chain Singapore, an authorised Seiko retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase — both are required when submitting the watch for service.
