The Seiko 5 Sports SRPD79K1 is blacked out from end to end: black hard-coated stainless steel case, black bezel, black dial, black nylon strap. Nothing on it catches light except the LumiBrite on the hands and markers. How does an automatic watch work — do I need to charge it?
No charging and no battery. A weighted rotor inside the movement spins as your wrist moves, winding the mainspring. Wearing it for a normal day keeps it running. If it stops after sitting unworn, wind it by hand — roughly 30 to 40 turns of the crown — and it will start again.
What happens if I do not wear it for a few days?
It stops. The 4R36 holds approximately 41 hours of power reserve from a full wind, so a watch taken off on Friday evening will typically have stopped by Sunday. Wind it by hand, reset the time, day and date, and carry on. This is normal for every mechanical watch and does not harm it.
What is the rotating bezel for?
Measuring elapsed time. Turn the bezel until its zero marker lines up with the minute hand, and from then on the minute hand reads how long has passed directly off the bezel scale. It turns in one direction only, which is a safety feature: if it gets knocked, it can only ever make the elapsed time read longer than it really is, never shorter.
Is this a diver's watch?
No, and the distinction matters. The case shape and rotating bezel come from Seiko's dive watch heritage, but this model is rated to 100 metres and is not certified as a diver's watch. It is fine for swimming, snorkelling and recreational water activity. For scuba diving you need a watch specified and marked as a diver's watch — the Prospex line is where those sit.
How accurate is a mechanical watch compared to quartz?

How does 42.5mm wear?
More comfortably than the number suggests. The lug-to-lug measurement is 46.0mm, which is genuinely short for a 42.5mm case, so it sits within the wrist rather than hanging over the edges. How durable is the black coating?
The case carries a hard coating over stainless steel, which raises surface hardness against everyday marks. It remains a surface treatment, so a hard enough impact against a sharp edge can eventually expose the steel underneath — this is true of every coated watch. Is Hardlex the same as sapphire?
No. Hardlex is Seiko's own hardened mineral glass. It resists shattering better than sapphire, which matters on a watch built for hard wear, but it scratches more easily — sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and mineral glass sits well below that. If a scratch-free crystal is your priority, look at models specified with sapphire instead.
