The Citizen AW1855-52E is the black Brycen — a sport-casual watch built entirely in black ion-plated stainless steel, case, bezel, crown and bracelet, with a black dial to match. Monochrome all the way through, with nothing to break the colour.
What stops it reading as a flat black slab is the geometry. What is black ion plating?
Ion plating bonds a hard coloured layer to the steel at a molecular level in a vacuum chamber, rather than sitting on the surface like paint or lacquer. The result is a uniform black finish that is considerably more wear-resistant than a coated one. It will still show marks over years of hard wear, particularly on the clasp and bracelet edges, but it holds up far better than the alternatives.
What does the bezel do?
It is a bidirectional friction bezel — it rotates in both directions and stays where you set it through friction rather than clicking through detents. You can use it to mark an elapsed period, for instance lining the marker up with the minute hand when you park or start cooking.
How does Eco-Drive work?
A solar cell beneath the dial converts light into electrical energy and stores it in a rechargeable cell. Any light works — sunlight, office lighting, a lamp. Normal daily wear keeps it running indefinitely, and there is no battery to replace at any point in the watch's life.
Does a black dial charge more slowly?
No. The solar cell sits beneath the dial and receives light through it regardless of the dial colour — Citizen designs the dial to transmit light to the cell. Ordinary daily wear charges it normally.
What happens if I don't wear it for a while?
A fully charged watch keeps running for approximately eight months in complete darkness. If it does stop, leaving it in bright light for a few hours restarts it and you simply reset the time. Storing it face-up near a window rather than in a closed drawer avoids the issue.
What is the insufficient charge warning?
When the charge runs low, the seconds hand starts moving in two-second jumps instead of one. That is the watch telling you it needs light. Place it somewhere bright for a few hours and normal operation resumes.
Will 42mm fit my wrist?
42mm suits wrists from roughly 16.5cm upward. At 10.9mm thick it is slimmer than most sports watches this wide, so it sits flatter than the diameter suggests. Bear in mind that an all-black case reads slightly smaller on the wrist than a steel one of the same size.
Can I swim with this watch?
Yes. With 100-metre (10 BAR) water resistance it is suitable for swimming, showering and snorkelling. It is not rated for scuba diving. Rinse with fresh water after saltwater or pool exposure to protect the finish.
How do I care for the black finish?
Wipe the case and bracelet with a soft dry cloth after wear, and keep the watch away from abrasive surfaces and strong chemicals such as cleaning products, chlorine and perfume. Ion plating is durable, but any dark finish shows wear more visibly than steel does, so the clasp and bracelet edges are worth protecting.
Is the bracelet adjustable?
